Flying in the mountains is a very different experience than flying in non-mountainous regions.
The risks, hazards, weather phenomena, terrain, winds and turbulence can be very different, and often much more variable and intense, than in other types of terrain.
Mountain Flight Training is recommended for any Pilot who is new to the mountain flying environment, or for those who would benefit from a refresher, if they have not been flying in mountainous terrain for a while.
There is no formal RATING for mountain flying, so there is no endorsement on your licence, but your enhanced awareness and knowledge of mountain flying will help to provide you with a safer and more enjoyable experience when flying in the mountain environment.
Anyone who is in a Pilot Training Program, or holds a Pilot Licence can register for our Mountain Flying Training & Checkout, however, if you are a very low time Pilot, you should tackle this training later on in your training plan, after you have already mastered navigation, and have a good handle on the control and characteristics of the airplane.
Your Flying Instructor can advise if you are ready to take on Mountain Flight Training, based on your current knowledge and skill level.
Our Mountain Flight Training Program includes 5 hours of Ground Training, and 10 hours of Flight Training.
The Flight Training hours requirement may be reduced if you are able to demonstrate proficiency earlier.
There is no Transport Canada written examination for Mountain Flight Training. You will be required to pass the Aurora Aviation Academy Mountain Flight Exam, prior to your Instructor signing off your Mountain Checkout.
There is no Transport Canada Flight examination for Mountain Flight Training.
Our Mountain Checkout is required if you intent to rent one of our airplanes for flight into the mountainous environment.
Each Student Pilot is able to determine their own pace, so that your Pilot Training fits your schedule and your financial plan.
Mountain Flight Training, resulting in a Mountain Checkout, may be completed in as little as one week, depending on how much time you are able to focus on this program.
The duration and cost of your Mountain Training will depend on how quickly you are able to demonstrate an understanding of the unique knowledge required, and the skills required to safely conduct flight operations in the mountainous environment.
Please contact us to review your experience and training history, so that we can provide an estimated cost for you to complete this training.
