Your VFR Over-the-Top (OTT) RATING is an additional endorsement to your Private Pilot Licence.
Completion of the VFR-OTT Rating allows you to fly VFR (Visual Flight Rules), over the top of cloud layers, as long as the departure and arrival airports are experiencing (and forecast to continue to experience) Visual Meteorological Conditions (VMC).
This allows you to fly on days when the cloud layer(s) might otherwise prevent you from flying.
In order to enroll in a VFR Over-the-Top RATING Program, you must hold a Private Pilot Licence.
Note: A Commercial Licence or IFR Rating includes a VFR OTT Rating.
In order to qualify for a VFR OTT Rating, you must achieve the following:
1. A minimum of 15 hours of Instrument Training.
Note: Your Instrument Training from your Private Pilot Licence and Night Rating may be applied to the 15 hour requirement. 5 hours of the 15 hour requirement may be conducted on an approved Flight Simulator (sorry, not on your home flight sim).
There is no written examination, but you must meet the skill requirements.
VFR-OTT Ground School consists of an expanded knowledge and understanding of the Air Regulations (CARs), Airspace, Weather, Instrument Flying Techniques and Radio Navigation.
Each Student Pilot is able to determine their own pace, so that your Pilot Training fits your schedule and your financial plan.
You could complete your VFR Over-the-Top Rating in as little as one week.
The Total Cost of your VFR-OTT Rating will depend on how much Instrument Flight Training you have already received.
We will do our best to advise & support you along the way, so that you can optimize your training experience.
